Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Varanasi signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a Sister City relationship in November 2014 to strengthen spiritual, cultural, educational, and tourism ties.
Both Kathmandu and Varanasi share deep spiritual bonds centered around Shaivism (Pashupatinath in Kathmandu and Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi), hosting millions of pilgrims and scholars between Nepal and India.
