Population

Kathmandu has been a densely inhabited urban center from historical times. The indigenous people and the creator of its unique are the Newars. They still make up a large segment of the population. Over the centuries various peoples have come to settle here, and the present demography is very cosmopolitan in makeup. Kathmandu, thus, offers a delightful array of different traditions and cultural practices.

Attracted by the economic opportunities, modern comforts and the bright light of the city, the capital has in recent years experienced a flood of migrants. The population, as a result, has been swelling rapidly. According to the census of 2001, KMC is the home to 671,846 residents.
